Plenty of edges in Yosemite.

A smoky day.

There are reminders everywhere of the effects of fire suppression and the five-year drought.

Drought has stressed hundreds of acres of trees, making them vulnerable to bark beetles, which girdle the trunks, and eventually kill the trees.

Fire has always been part of this ecosystem, so the scars from controlled burns are good news.
Hope controlled burns will prevent future 250,000 acre fires.

You can’t help but be awestruck visiting this huge and beautiful national park. If the drought continues, or if (when?) there is another big fire, a new ecosystem will emerge.
Yosemite will be fine.
Will we?

Last time we were in Yosemite there was a controlled fire. Also an eerie sight in such a beautiful place.

The park wardens must worry enough about accidental cause of fire with people wandering all over the place. There are probably penalties..
Were you there for the day?

Fall! Or spring. Summer is too crowded. Spring the waterfalls are spectacular. Fall the weather is wonderful.

It’s been over a decade since I’ve been to Yosemite. I had a love/hate relationship with the park, but it may be better now with more shuttles in place. It was just so crowded. When I worked in Yellowstone in 96-98 the fire devastation was still readily apparent. This summer, the Pioneer Fire was the big one in Idaho. An interesting note on Idaho and the huge fire of 1910 was how that giant tinderbox caused new practices to be put into place. The realization that fire serves a purpose in forest management was a long time coming.

Yes on learning about the importance of fire. It took a long time.
Yosemite valley was very crowded this year, even in September, the “perfect” time to go. Probably related to celebration of national parks, but it seemed like camping everywhere was crowded this year. It’s as if people are suddenly realizing what a treasure we have in our open and spaces and are crazy to get out and enjoy them. Tuolumne was nice however, especially if you hiked a mile or two away from the road.
You worked in Yellowstone? That must have been a cool job. Still on my list of places to visit.
